The Afghan women judges and their families need immediate humanitarian support for living expenses and education expenses. The first priority, which all of them have been working on since their arrival, is to achieve proficiency in the English language. From there, many want to enter law school or college programs to qualify them for law-related careers such as immigration work, civil service positions in the courts, or paralegal/law clerk positions.
Funds raised will be used to directly support those efforts by paying for tuition, books, child care expenses so the parent can attend school, and supplementing rent and other living expenses while the women are out of the workforce for education purposes.
The Afghan Women’s Organization (afghanwomen.org) is a provincially incorporated not-for-profit corporation that has existed for over 30 years. The AWO provides settlement and integration services to all newcomers. Including women and their families who have experienced war and persecution. The AWO has been an ally and friend to our work with these Afghan families from the outset. Pursuant to a Memorandum of Understanding, the AWO has agreed to accept the monies raised for the Afghan Women Judges in Ontario and hold and account for those funds on the conditions set out in the Memorandum of Understanding. A committee has been established including, The Honourable Frances Kiteley, The Honourable Tamarin Dunnet, and a lawyer to be identified, for purposes of making recommendations for the disbursement of funds based on identified needs. Disbursements will be consistent with the charitable vision, missions, and values of AWO, which are closely aligned with those of the Friends of Afghan Women Judges in Ontario.
